D.R. BENNETT | | Hi,
I recently published two of my books with the infamous "Publish America". I am curious if anyone else has experienced the great joys of dealing with them*

Robin Gorley | | Dear Bennett,
I am a published author through PA, and I have had no problems with them. There are the draw backs, but that comes with any publisher.

Kathy Blaylock | | Hello, I just wanted to say proudly, that I too am a published author of Publish America. They have published two of my fiction books as well, Conceiving Evil a horror, and The Adventures Of Buddy Fairy and Friends, a delightful children's book of what else, adventures. I love Publish America and what they have helped me to achieve. Those that have bad things to say about PA must be those that were looking for a way to get rich quick. Well it doesn't happen over night, and maybe never folks. That is why we, along with the artist are called starving artist. I am not rich, nor do I have alot of the things that I would like to have, far, far from it. But I write because I love to paint life, people and places with my words. And that is what being an author/writer is, someone that loves creating something to share with others, and having to do it because it is after all part of you. Take Care Everyone, Kathy p.s. come by my website sometime at http://www.freewebs.com/humanneeds2003/ and come on by Forbidden Publications and look me up and check out my ebooks. www.forbidden publications.com Private Reply to Kathy Blaylock |

Saunthara Subramaniam Velu | | Thanks for the reply Mr Bennett. I was however referring to nationality, not race, since it says 'Publish America'.

kdwells | | Subra, Publish America is simply a name they use. It has nothing to do (as far as I know) with any requirements for geography or nationality. The name was chosen as a mission statement of sorts, as in an action. To publish America. I can't imagine they wouldn't take authors from outside the US.
That said, I've published several articles about Publish America. I have never used them personally but they have gotten a bad rap.

Jenny | | Here's a link that will tell you a lot about Author House:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AuthorHouse
My grandmother used Author House (then 1st Books) when she published her first book. It was pretty much a disaster from the get go. They screwed up her cover so bad (that my mother designed) it had to be corrected about three times before they got it right. (The colors were altered and horrible.)
Then they had numerous delays, undid her editing, duplicated pages that weren't in her original document, and left off pages.
They don't have a good reputation. If you're interested in self-publishing, Lulu.com has a good reputation and is very inexpensive.
I hope this helps! Warmly, Jenny:)Private Reply to Jenny |

Diane Stephenson | | I was published with PublishAmerica several years ago. Being new to the publishing world, I did not know how to do my homework. The printing of the book was OK, but there were a lot of pages with too much 'white space'. It could have had a better layout. I supplied the photo for my cover, so that was pretty good. But the company itself has no business ethics whatever. People tried to order on Barnes & Noble, one of the sites where my book was listed, and were told to reorder. They never did get the book.
PA makes their money on star-struck authors who purchase their own books to sell. Yes, PA states that you don't have to do that, but most people fall for the offer--myself included. Had I not purchased my own books, there would have been almost no sales in 4 years. And yet, those who purchased books from me gave me very positive feedback. Some people bought several to give away to family and friends.
I tried over and over to get a release from my contract, but to no avail. I was told that it would not be to my advantage or theirs. But when I asked what advantage there could be when no books had sold, I did not receive an answer. They are experts on ignoring your questions and giving answers to questions you did not ask. They do cut and paste answers, never specific to a personal request. I received some very ignorant e-mails from them as did a friend of mine. In fact the messages she got from them were far worse than mine.
Over a four-year period I received less than $5.00 in royalties. They call themselves traditional publishers, but in fact they are not. Stores usually will not purchase from PA because of their low discount compared with traditional publishers. I would never recommend anyone who is a serious writer to go with PublishAmerica. It could lessen your credibility when submitting to a traditional publisher. Some won't touch anyone who has been with PA.
So, check out Absolute Write New Neverending Publish America thread to find out what others are saying about PA. And if you are really serious about being published, expect rejections--possibly dozens of them--before being accepted by a good publisher. The wait will be worth it. But if you only want a couple of books in hand to say, "I've had a book published!", or a few books to give to your family, then PA may be the way for you.
By the way, I finally got my release a couple of weeks ago. Yea!
To all you aspiring authors--and seasoned authors, too--I wish you success in the publishing world. I am in the midst of final revision on my novel and will definitely be submitting to a traditional publisher. PublishAmerica? Never again!
Diane

Heather McAlendin | | Yes I am published with P.A and have had no difficulties at all with them. They have delivered everything as stated in my contract. They state very clearly that your contract with them is for 7 years.
No, they are not traditional publisher they are P.O.D. and the author is expected to do alot of promoting. If you are willing to work at it, you can be quite successful.
My book and cover turned out better than I expected and I have had positive review from readers in both Canada and the U.S.
Just my two cents. : 0 )

Jenny | | Heather, to be clear:
POD is short for "print on demand" and is a process of creating books individual, rather than a print run.
Many traditional publishers use the POD process to create their books. Using POD does not indicate whether one is traditionally published or not.
A traditional publisher is generally defined by: purchasing rights with an advance, paying a royalty, offering industry-standard discounts and returns to booksellers, a strict vetting process, in-house editing staff, etc. Whether they use POD technology or not doesn't impact that business model.
Here's more about POD:

Hope that helps!
Warmly, Jenny:)
